National Children’s Week aims to bring attention to the wider community of children, their needs and their achievements. Children’s Week celebrates the rights of children and their right to enjoy childhood. Children’s Week began in 1996 and has a permanent theme titled: “A caring world shares”.
Children’s Week is focused upon ensuring that children’s rights are recognised and promotes the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Article 12 says that:
“Children have the right to say what they think should happen when adults are making decisions that affect them and to have their opinions taken into account.”
This year at Camden Council we have endeavoured to collect the voices of children around Camden as all children have the right to be heard. We have asked them what decisions they get to make in their lives and what they wish adults would listen to them about. Keep an eye out this week for the videos of children’s voices from schools and childcare centres around the Camden area.
